Defining the Role
An Ontario Land Surveyor (OLS) is a licensed professional who determines, marks, and maps property boundaries in Ontario. They are the only individuals legally authorized to perform boundary surveys in the province.
OLSs use advanced equipment and detailed historical research to locate property limits, resolve boundary disputes, and prepare legal survey plans used in land registration and development.
The Association of Ontario Land Surveyors (AOLS)
The AOLS is the governing body for professional land surveyors in Ontario.
- Established in 1892 under the Surveyors Act, the AOLS regulates the profession to protect the public interest.
- It licenses individuals and firms, enforces a Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, and manages complaints and discipline.
- Only surveyors licensed by the AOLS and holding a Certificate of Authorization may legally offer cadastral (boundary) surveying services to the public.
Why Licensing Matters
Working with a licensed Ontario Land Surveyor ensures:
- Accuracy and reliability - boundaries are verified and legally recognized.
- Protection - only licensed surveyors are insured for professional liability.
- Compliance - their work meets provincial laws, municipal standards, and title requirements.
Hiring anyone who isn’t licensed by the AOLS to perform boundary work risks costly errors, title issues, and invalid surveys.
